Due to strong public backlash the MAGA right could not get the SAVE act passed in Congress so they’re attempting to do an end run via the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC)
For more information see this issue of Joyce Vance’s Civil Discourse column.
The Right is flooding the comments page with, well the technical term is lies, so we need as many people as possible to add thoughtful comments opposing a national voter ID requirement.
Recently I’ve heard spokespeople from our current administration use the phrases like “transgender for everybody”, “everything is transgender”, or similar.
I honestly had no idea what they were talking about so I did some digging on the InterWebs.
Apparently folks of the MAGA persuasion are pushing the idea that:
Trans identity/gender-affirming treatment is being pushed so broadly that soon everyone will be considered trans (often as a way to suggest that children, schools, or society at large will normalize trans identity for all).
Schools, the medical establishment, popular culture, or the “left” are pressuring people (especially kids) to question their gender or adopt trans identities.
Laws, policies, or expectations are changing so fast that there will be strong social, legal, or medical pressure for people to identify (or be identified) as trans, regardless of their actual identity.1
As someone “on the left” this sounds ludicrous to me. But apparently there are folks in this country who consider anyone on “the left” to be a “Marxist, Communist, Fascist, Socialist2” who wants to take children out of school an perform gender re-assignment surgery on them.
This is patently ridiculous, but there appear to be quite a few people in this country who, apparently, only watch Faux Gnus, and other MAGA influenced “news” sources3 and many of them swallow this garbage hook, line and sinker.
My suspicion is that a lot of people fear the ever-accelerating pace of change in the world and feel like they’re getting the dirty end of the stick. If someone comes along with what sounds like simple fixes to complex problems that the evil Liberals and Progressives refuse to implement, not to mention the “evil furriners” pouring across the border to take our jobs, women and culture, you might say, “what the hell, what’s the worst that could happen?
As it turns out, we’re seeing the worst that could happen right now.
But once again I digress.
Sometimes I use ChatGPT to help me get my thoughts and data in order. I asked it to create a concise “fact-vs-rhetoric” table — showing what’s verifiably true, what’s disputed, and what’s rhetorical framing from each side.
Here’s what it came up with:
To me the MAGA framing is primarily based on fear and/or disapproval of ways of living they don’t understand.
The Progressive framing is much more accepting of diversity.
For reasons I don’t understand the concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion are an anathema to those on the right, in spite of the fact that their preferred prophet4 consistently delivered messages of love, acceptance of diversity and inclusion.
I like this guy’s message:

Trump lie of the week:
Lies our President has told recently. Not necessarily this week. I’m only posting statements rated “Pants On Fire!” by Politifact. I’m too disorganized/lazy to keep track of these so I there may be duplicates once in a while.
Two this week. The first from 2024 claims that the Biden administration manipulated Job Statistics because the BLS report showed a decrease in unemployment, the second from this year claiming the BLS report was rigged because it showed a less-than-stellar jobs report on his watch.
There is absolutely no evidence that either of these statements are true.
Musical Coda:
This old Kinks song seems appropriate to this post:

This is a direct copy and paste from part of the response to the question “MAGA spokespeople are complaining about “trans for everyone.” This sounds ludicrous. What are the talking about?” typed into ChatGPT. I was going to paraphrase it, but the LLM stated the position pretty well, so I left it as is.
The concept of a Marxist, Communist, Socialist who is also a Fascist makes my brain hurt, but nobody ever said Trump was a deep thinker.
This article is about six years old, but still relevant. Fox “News”, “News”Max and similar propaganda cable channels, not to mention various right-wing podcasters and social media outlets still use the same tactics to strike fear into their viewers, readers and listeners. Not to say that MSNBC doesn’t stir the pot for Progressive consumers of their media, but it appears to me that the progressive media sticks closer to the truth than the so-called conservative media outlets.
I’m talking about Jesus. Duh.
