As an agnostic progressive person who thinks government should be in the business of identifying and helping to solve problems, the last few weeks have been tough for me.

On the philosophy that, since I don’t know if there is a prime mover, and even if there is it’s unlikely that such a powerful being would even be aware of the carbon units infesting this small planet in an infinite universe, prayer may not help, but it certainly won’t hurt anything, so you might as well send up a prayer every now and then.

A long time ago I attended a Bat Mitzvah for the daughter of a friend. The Rabbi gave a sermon on prayer which stuck with me. In short, to pray effectively don’t pray for a boon, such as winning the lottery, or getting a promotion at work, or miraculously recovering your youth (dammit!). …
